What comes to mind when you think of Kansas?

Kansas is much more than a flat middle - of - the - road state.  It has an
interesting history.  In 1854 the problem of whether to allow slavery in the
territories forced lawmakers into action.  Congress passed the
Kansas-Nebraska Act, which opened up both territories to settlers.
The Kansas-Nebraska Act said the decision to allow slavery in the territory
should be made by the people who settled there.  By 1855 antislavery
settlers called Free Soilers, had established a territorial government in
Lawrence, Kansas.  Fighting among the Free Soilers and pro-slavery
labeled the territory "Bleeding Kansas."

Because Kansas had once been home to a strong antislavery movement
many Black Americans decided to move to Kansas.  Between 1870 and
1880 the number of African Americans in the state increased from about
17,000 to more than 43,000.  Many settled in and around Nicodemus in the
Northern part of Kansas.  African Americans fought in the United States
Armed Forces in every war.  After the Civil War ended horse mounted
cavalry units of African Americans troops were formed and sent to Kansas
as well as other areas of the Great Plains.  The Plains Indians began to call
the cavalrymen Buffalo Soldiers, and the troops wore that nickname proudly.

In the early 1950's, one of the most important events in modern United
States history took place in Kansas.  This was the United States Supreme
Court case known as Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka Kansas.
